Kumano Cherry: Capturing the Beauty of a Rare Blossom

A Precious Cherry Blossom Found in Kozagawa Town

A new kind of cherry blossom was discovered for the first time in 100 years. Photographer Daisuke Kawashima aims to capture the most beautiful moment of the year by photographing the important cherry blossoms in Kozagawa Town. This rare and precious cherry blossom is carefully protected by the local residents, making it a sight that can only be experienced by those living in the town.

Located in the mountains, the Kumano Cherry tree blooms for about three days, creating a breathtaking spectacle. However, capturing this fleeting beauty is no easy task. The photographer must wake up before dawn and embark on a journey through the night to reach the shooting location in time for the morning sun, which illuminates the cherry blossoms in their full glory.

These perfect conditions align only once every few years, making the photographs of Kumano Cherry truly unique. The stunning images showcase the delicate pink petals against the backdrop of the serene town, creating a sense of tranquility and wonder.

The photographs of Kumano Cherry have become an integral part of promoting Kozagawa Town as a tourist destination. Used in homepages, posters, and pamphlets, these images serve as an icon for the town, enticing visitors to come and witness the beauty of this rare cherry blossom.

The project to preserve Kumano Cherry began in March 2019 and is an ongoing effort in Kozagawa Town, Japan. By raising awareness of this new type of cherry blossom, the town hopes to attract tourists and showcase the natural beauty that it has to offer.

The captivating photographs of Kumano Cherry have garnered recognition and acclaim. In 2021, the design was awarded the Iron A' Design Award in Photography and Photo Manipulation. This prestigious accolade is given to designs that demonstrate innovation, practicality, and professional excellence.

Through the lens of Daisuke Kawashima, the Kumano Cherry comes to life, inviting viewers to appreciate the ephemeral beauty of nature and the rich cultural heritage of Kozagawa Town.
